Acetoxyl

Acetoxyl is a medication commonly used in the treatment of acne. It is generally administered in the form of an Acetoxyl gel.

What it Does:

Acetoxyl treats acne by drying the infection deep in the pores that causes acne pimples and helping the skin peel. It is generally used one to two times daily, and always after washing the affecting area to eliminate oils that may prevent the medication from taking effect.

It is also often prescribed for the treatment of bed sores and certain types of skin ulcers.

Acetoxyl is for external use only and should not be used near tear ducts or other secreting glands.

Active Ingredients:

2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide-Benzoyl Peroxide is a commonly used acne medication that is available over the counter. It should be used locally, and only on affected areas. Some cleansers may contain Benzoyl Peroxide for the treatment of generalized treatment of acne. It has been known to bleach hair and fabrics and should be used with care.

The gel base used in the administration of Acetoxyl contains acetone, carbomer 940, polypropylene glycol, purified water, sodium lauryl sulfate and triethanolamine. Patients with known skin sensitivities to these ingredients should talk to their doctor prior to use. Generic forms of Acetoxyl are available; read the complete drug sheet before use to confirm inactive ingredients, as they may vary between brands.

Acetoxyl (or, more specifically, Benzoyl Peroxide) is available in a gel, soap, lotion, solution, cream, liquid, pad and foam form as well.

Side Effects:

Patients with known allergies or sensitivity to Benzoyl Peroxide shouldn't use Acetoxyl. Signs of allergy include hives, eczema and contact dermatitis. Patients with a sensitivity to Acetoxyl will often find their condition gets notably worse rather than better. Reactions have also been seen in patients with allergies or sensitivities to foods, dyes, preservatives or animals.

Many patients will experience dry skin when using Acetoxyl in the treatment of acne, especially if its use is not localized. Moisturizing facial washes and using lotion and toners designed specifically for dry, damaged skin can help alleviate the side effects of Acetoxyl.
